Excavation of the new labyrinth site at Hap Magee Ranch Park in Danville is set to begin this month.
The Danville Town Council approved the stone paver maze for the park last July, and a private group from the San Ramon Valley United Methodist Church is financing the project as a donation to the community.
The singular, winding walking path that weaves back and forth to the center of the circular designed structure is intended to offer peace of mind and meditation, making it a fitting amenity for the park’s peaceful nature, town officials said in a statement.
The hand-sculpted, non-denominational labyrinth will be 42 feet in diameter and occupy a space behind the Magee House where there is currently a natural dirt surface. The maze will be directly adjacent to the San Ramon Creek and shaded by surrounding mature trees, according to town officials.
Current amenities at Hap Magee Ranch Park, located at 1025 La Gonda Way, include play structures for children, a dog park, open grass fields and picnic areas, and it is home to the community-service Bounty Garden.
Construction for the new labyrinth is set to begin at the end of this month, weather permitting, and it is anticipated to open for use in late spring, according to town officials.
