Two online surveys are open now until September for San Ramon residents and businesses to provide feedback about the current state of the city’s garbage and recycling programs and several proposed new services.
During last Tuesday’s regular City Council meeting, the council and city staff discussed San Ramon’s long-term goals to divert solid waste away from the landfill and commercial recycling strategies.
The state-mandated diversion rate is currently at 50% and San Ramon’s 2014 diversion rate including residential and commercial sectors is estimated at about 43%.
According to the city website, officials plan to implement a new garbage, recycling and composting service agreement in 2019, and they are reaching out to the community by way of surveys for suggestions about what to include in the new agreement that could help improve San Ramon’s overall diversion rate.
One of the two surveys titled “Recycle 2020: All Residents and Businesses” is modeled as a questionnaire that asks survey-takers to describe what they like about the city’s current garbage and recycling programs as well as what they dislike or what needs improvement.
The second survey, “Recycle 2020: Single Family Homes – Priorities for Services” asks survey-takers of single-family homes to prioritize some of the proposed new garbage and recycling services by allocating an imaginary $500 to the most important services.
Some of the proposed services include on-call collection of extra cardboard, on-call collection of extra yard trimmings, weekly curbside collection of household batteries and fluorescent lightbulbs, and rate discounts for seniors and low income residents.
As of Wednesday afternoon, 17 prioritization lists were posted and 14 questionnaire responses. Both surveys are scheduled to remain open until 5 p.m. on Sept. 1.

The new organics inclusion with the gardening green container has been great and has made a big decrease in our black container. We appreciate getting the small food container to use. Helpful to have the opportunity to include plastic bags and other recyclable materials in separate bags for pick-up.
I need a class on this garbage separation. It is confusing. Any helpful classes on these many garbage cans? And, how is this green? Used to be one garbage truck coming up the road, now we have four of them.
